Pedestrian Safety
Walk safe, walk aware
Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users worldwide, facing alarming risks. Every year, over 270,000 pedestrians lose their lives on the roads, accounting for 22% of total road fatalities.
This percentage surges to two-thirds in some low- and middle-income countries, such as Pakistan. Furthermore, millions of pedestrians suffer injuries in road accidents, with many left disabled and experiencing long-term psychological trauma.
One – fifth
of the people killed annually in the country on roads are pedestrians.
In Pakistan, walking is a the most common mode of transportation, yet it has become increasingly perilous due to the growing risk of road accidents. The country’s rising motorization rates, frequent vehicle usage, inadequate pedestrian infrastructure, and lax traffic law enforcement all exacerbate the vulnerability of pedestrians.
Safety measures for Pedestrians
“Out of 193 recognized nation states, only 28 countries in the World have laws with respect to speeding, drunk driving, helmets, seat belts and child restraints.”

And rightly so. Pedestrian safety is all about ensuring the safety of people on foot from vehicles and other road hazards. Safety measures for pedestrian can be done in multiple ways.
Framework-based
Framework based measures are investments in proper infrastructure to facilitate the pedestrians on road. This involves making marked crosswalks, zebra crossings that help pedestrians to cross the road safely. Well developed and maintained pedestrian, side-walks, bridges and tunnels are also viable options. Smartly added road bumps slows down vehicle speed, aiding pedestrian safety.
Tech-based
Tech-based measures are newly developed apps and gadgets that help drivers as well as pedestrians. Smart watches and apps are now available that keeps a pedestrian updated regarding traffic situations. Similarly, scanners and cameras are available that detect pedestrians and alert the drivers.
Attitude-based
Includes creating awareness amongst drivers and general public regarding pedestrian safety. Pedestrian safety training should be made a mandatory part of drivers’ learning. At the same time, teaching pedestrians, especially children and seniors, about safe walking practices is essential for success.
