The metropolitan cities of Pakistan are fast growing in numbers- both with respect to people and vehicles. With the passenger car market projected to reach $ 3,293 million, Pakistan has a little over 7 million registered vehicles on road. Sadly, with slacking law enforcement and little knowledge and respect regarding responsibility and rights of others, unlawful parking has become a constant pain and nuisance for commuters. Imprudent and incorrect parking not only reduce traffic speed but it often also leads to road side accidents, disruptions and problems which makes smooth flow of traffic a challenge.

Many of these issues are easily avoidable by following curb parking ethics. Curb parking also known as street parking is when vehicles are parked at designated parking spots on a curb or areas specified by concrete barriers. Good curb parking practices requires the driver to check their mirrors and blind spots before slowing down. It is prudent to practice slow-maneuvers and often parking behind another vehicle is suggested so that one has a reference point.  The driver should try to park as close to the curb as possible, ideally with 6 to 12 inches to ensure that traffic is not obstructed. Another point to consider is that the entire vehicle is within the lane of traffic and not extending to street. Lastly, always leave a distance of 1 to 2 feet with adjacent cars to allow easy entry and exits from the vehicles.

To ensure that people practice proper curb parking, the government should ensure designated parking areas with marked lines and signage. Strict action should be taken against violators. If the parking area is time bound, it should be ensured that vehicles are parked and removed within the specific time periods. Additionally, all parking areas should have designated parking spaces for differently abled. Government can also engage citizens and corporate sector to collaborate and address concerns and optimize curb parking management.

Lastly, it is the responsibility of government and citizens alike and a joint effort will ensure smooth flow of traffic across the country. Remember, Park Responsibly for a Safer Community.
